Grass fire closes highway; fire danger high across Upper Peninsula

A grass fire temporarily closed M-35 in Forsyth Township on Saturday afternoon. Around 2 p.m., sparks from a downed power line ignited a fire on the north side of the highway near ACE Hardware.

Forsyth Township Fire and EMS responded, along with the Marquette County Sheriff's Department. As of 3:15 p.m. Saturday, M-35 was closed from M-553 to Blue Lake Road, and traffic was rerouted.

The fire burned about half an acre, and no injuries were reported. UPPCO crews were called to fix the power line.

Dry and warm conditions caused the fire to spread. Fire danger remains high across the entire Upper Peninsula on Saturday, and the DNR said no burning permits are being issued in any U.P. county.
