Group donates 700 lbs of venison to local pantries

Wildlife Unlimited of Iron County has been helping the food pantries in their area for over 15 years. This year, they donated 700 pounds of venison.

Local hunters from all over the area donated the meat to Saint Vincent Depaul's of Iron River and Crystal Falls. The meat was processed at a discounted rate by Sommer's Sausage in Crystal Falls. Those with the organization said food donation is a large part of what they do, and the people in the community benefit greatly.

â??Itâ??s very popular when the venison comes in; a lot of people stand in line to get it and it's healthy for the people,â?? said President, Rick Commenator. â??Itâ??s something that we can give back to the community.â??

Commenator said over the years they've donated close to one whole ton of venison. Wildlife Unlimited is gearing up for their annual Membership Banquet this spring which has already sold out. The organization also coordinates the annual Youth Hunt, and they help with the Iron County 4H Sharp Shooters Range and Program. They frequently provide feed to local turkeys to ensure survival, and they educate local students on the importance of outdoor responsibility and leisure.
