The Mentor Michigan College Coaching Corps is offering assistance with filling out free applications for federal student aid forms. AmeriCorps members will be available to help families of graduating high school seniors and college students fill out the paperwork. FAFSA is required to receive grants and scholarships for college. Participating families will need to bring a social security card, drivers license, W-2 forms, a completed income tax return, and current bank statements. Kailee Laplander, AmeriCorps member at Finlandia University, says the nationwide program is a great opportunity for students and their families to get a little more help preparing for college.
"This is one of the obstacles that many families face is they don't like filling out the form. It can be intimidating for some people, so we want to be there and be of assistance and help people to make sure that that doesn't become an obstacle," said Laplander.
The free professional assistance will be given Sunday, February 10 at the Jutila Center in Hancock from 2 to 4 p.m. and Wednesday, February 13 at the Baraga High School library from 5 to 8 p.m
