Honor Flight expands to new veterans

The Upper Peninsula Honor Flight announced it will now be accepting Korean War veterans on their next tour of Washington D.C.

Previously, the Honor Flight only accepted World War II veterans. The Honor Flight Committee, in addition to the announcement, is holding fundraising events to raise money for its fifth mission next September.

"Our last flight, we noticed that the vets were a little slower, a little more wheelchair bound because they were two years older since our very first flight," said Honor Flight board member Sue Beranek. "So, as these vets age, we realized that we are now able to take Korean vets with us."

Events to fund the flights are underway this weekend. On Saturday the fundraising committee will be at the U.P. International Raceway. On Tuesday, they'll be at Culver's in Houghton, Marquette and Escanaba.

The flights are not sponsored by any major company and depend on fundraising events.
