The Negaunee Elks held their annual Flag Day ceremony Saturday evening. The group honored the flag with the National Anthem, Pledge of Allegiance and prayer. Negaunee sixth grader, Conner Anderson, read his Americanism essay that won first place in the state. The ceremony including a history of the American flag from the days surrounding the American revolution to its current form.
"Flag Day is extremely important, I believe, to all of us that it is the symbol of our nation; all the sacrifice that everybody throughout history has made to serve under that flag," said Mike Ilmonen of the Negaunee Elks. "We, as Elks, especially are extremely proud to be an organization that honors the flag."
Elk members from Ishpeming and Marquette were also on hand for the Flag Day ceremony. Next year the ceremony will be held in either Marquette or Ishpeming.
