      Hospice volunteers recognized

The Portage Health Hospice held their annual volunteer appreciation dinner in Hancock on Thursday night to recognize outstanding hospice volunteer efforts.

Portage Health Hospice has 32 hospice volunteers who work with patients at the hospital. Two volunteers were recognized for their dedication to the patients. Kristen Gabby and Delores Kotajarvi received the bronze level President's Volunteer Service Award, and Kotajarvi also won the Volunteer of the Year Award.

Hospice staff members say Kotajarvi is deserving of the award because of her deep connection and care for her patients.

"She connects so great with our families," said Volunteer Coordinator Marianne Berghefer. "It's so good to go through the paperwork and make phone calls, check in, and the families just sing her praises."

"I've been so surprised," explained Kotajarvi. "You know, it's great. I never though I'd win anything. I just wanted to do something with my time."

The dinner also celebrated the hard work of all Portage Health Hospice volunteers.
