How many businesses can say that they have been in operation with the same family under the helm since 1879? Getz's clothiers got their start in Michigamme back in the late 1800's. The store moved to Marquette around 1900 and has drawn quite a business ever since.
"With the type of merchandise that we carry, that we have to be very regional and so we try to structure our business toward that," said Dennis Mingay, Store Manager at Getzâ??s Clothiers.
Getz's puts quite a bit of effort into serving the U.P. A number of the 40 employees currently at the store came from NMU, both as students and graduates. Although it's important to note that not only is Getz's proud to serve and employ residents of the U.P., they are also proud to sell products made in the U.P.
"There's a great company we deal with over in Ironwood called Stormy Kromer and we happen to be their biggest vendor. We love selling their product," said Mingay.
Last year, Getz's sold almost 3,500 hats made by Stormy Kromer.
If this still isn't enough, Getz's has taken to the internet with quite a bit of success. Since its inception, the website has allowed the store to reach even more people both around the world and right here in the U.P.
"Getzs.com was a vision 20 years ago before anybody knew what this was going to be and ownership has a passion like no other for retail and they wanted to give it a shot and see what we could do with it and here we are 20 years later," said Keith Dickson, Operations Manager at Getzâ??s Clothiers.
Now, Getz's is even on Amazon representing some big brands such as Carhart to be one of a few stores to supply Amazon customers with their merchandise.
The time and effort put forth by the Getz Family certainly runs deep through the U.P.
