Mon, 14 Oct 2013 05:04:45 GMT — Future hunters earned their Hunter Safety Certificates in Negaunee Township Sunday. About 30 people of all ages traveled to the Negaunee Rod and Gun Club for a Hunter Field Day. Members of the Department of Natural Resources and the gun club lead a four-hour class to complete their training for certification. The safety certification is a requirement to get a hunting license. They had to pass an online or home study course before Sunday's written test. "It's absolutely important to know how to handle a weapon, how to treat a firearm. It's going to save lives when you go out into the field," said Patrick Deidrich of Houghton, who is taking the class. Opening day of firearm deer season is on Friday, November 15.
