The bike route from Marquette to Sugar Loaf Mountain is being extended thanks to improvements made to Marquette County Road 550.
According to Marquette Charter Township, the bike route is being extended to Eagles Nest Road in an effort to provide safe access to key natural, cultural and recreational assets in the area. The route is being extended thanks to changes to County Road 550, which had paved shoulders widened to four feet. This meets state requirements to be designated as a bike route.
In addition to these bike route changes, Sugar Loaf Mountain's parking lot will see a face lift this summer, complete with clearly marked parking spots.
Little Presque Isle and Wetmore Landing will also see improvements this summer, according to officials. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources received a $50,000 grant in 2013 to improve entrances, driveways and parking lots of the two areas. The Marquette County Road Commission was able to work with the CR 550 contractor to install the materials and perform site balancing to maximize the DNR's budget.
New entrance signs designed by the DNR will also be installed.
