Construction is underway on the southern portion of the Iron Heritage Trail.
The trail starts at the Old Bank Building in Republic and initially goes 2.3 miles. It will run along the lake, near the wetlands and will be a good spot for wildlife viewing.
A loop will also be incorporated that goes to the Community Cemetery.
"Is ecstatic too strong of a word? I am," says Gary Johnson, township supervisor. "This is all changing the mentality, topography; it's getting rid of a lunar scape that we've been for so many years. Making us look more like an inviting community."
Officials are also looking at providing bike rentals once it's complete. A trail marker dedication is set for Thursday morning.
