The IronLine sled dog race in Iron River is happening next weekend, and coordinators are working hard to make sure itâ??s another success this year. Race director, Josh Brindle, said the community involvement has skyrocketed this year, with people volunteering as trail groomers, dog handlers, and race timers. Another example of community involvement with the race is the $5,000 contribution the City of Iron River made towards the race purse.
â??We were able to, just adding a little bit of our registration money and things, to get a $7,000 purse this year which more than doubles what were involved with last year,â?? said Brindle. â??It really makes the race more lucrative, more competitive, but it still keeps it fun. Itâ??s still in that kind of medium-sized race.â??
There will be a â??Mushers' Villageâ?? at the event with vendors and refreshments, and coordinators said theyâ??re always looking for additional volunteers to help out with the event. You can visit their Facebook page or their website for more information. The IronLine race starts next Friday, January 31, with opening ceremonies beginning at 6 p.m. Central Time at the RV Park in Iron River.
