Big cuts in the food stamp program are forcing more needy individuals to area food banks. Food stamps took a big hit with the new federal budget last Friday. Some five billion dollars was cut. Nearly 1.8 million Michigan residents receive benefits through the Bridge Card. In Upper Michigan, the Ishpeming Knights of Columbus are doing what they can to make sure those food banks are full for the fall and winter. The Feeding America Food Bank in Ishpeming received a $2,000 donation from the group.
"We're very thankful to the Knights of Columbus for donating these funds to us, and it will provide thousands of meals for the families in the U.P. that need it the most," said Dave Mason of the Feeding America Food Bank.
The Feeding America Food Bank and Pantry supplies other food pantries, like the Salvation Army and St. Vincent De Paul stores. They also have their own pantry, making them the only food bank and pantry in the state.
