The Ishpeming man accused of sex crimes involving children was arraigned Thursday morning in Marquette County Circuit Court.
Fourty-four-year-old John Wayne Matthews appeared in court via video conference from the Marquette County Jail.
Matthews was arrested in August 2013 and charged with accosting a child for immoral purposes and criminal sexual conduct, Fourth degree.
During the arraignment, Judge Thomas L. Solka read Matthews' prior felonies in several counties involving larceny, breaking and entering, and another accusation of criminal sexual conduct with a child under the age of 16.
Matthews and his lawyer had planned to plead not guilty in the arraignment involving the charge of accosting a child for immoral purposes, but the defendant later became uncontrollable and chose to exit the video conference room at the jail.
If convicted of the felonies of sexual misconduct with a minor, Matthews could face a maximum of life in prison.
The pretrial is set for Monday, November 18 at 8:30 a.m.
