Isle Royale National Park has received a $1.8 million donation from the National Parks Concession Incorporation for the construction of a photovoltaic system at Rock Harbor.
The national park has been in the process of setting up the new $7 million solar energy system after the NPCI donated $500,000 to the project last year.
The project is being done to reduce the island's dependency on diesel fuel for energy by 80 percent.
Isle Royale officials said they hope the new solar power system will encourage other towns and cities to take advantage of the energy-saving panels.
â??We hope to demonstrate how well photovoltaic systems can work for small towns, if you will, and we're going to try to give them the tools through this project to learn more about how alternative energy can make a difference,â?? said park superintendent Phyllis Green.
The park hopes the project will be installed and running by the end of 2014.
