JCPenney has announced the closure of 33 underperforming stores across the country, including one in Marquette.
The company announced on Wednesday that the Marquette JCPenney in the Westwood Mall will be closing sometime in 2014. The company says that closing the 33 locations will eliminate 2,000 positions and save approximately $65 million.
"As we continue to progress toward long-term profitable growth, it is necessary to reexamine the financial performance of our store portfolio and adjust our national footprint according," said Myron E. Ullman, III, chief executive officer of JCPenney.
JCPenney currently owns and operates 1,100 stores nationwide.
There are no details as to when the Marquette location will close, but the company says remaining inventory will be sold over the next several months, with final closings expected to be finished in May.
