Kids learn reading skills early in Negaunee

Children of all ages spent a fun and interactive morning at Lakeview Elementary in Negaunee on Friday.

Teachers and volunteers held a story hour with about 40 preschoolers as part of the Rock and Read Project Newborn program at Negaunee Public Schools. The program is designed to get children interested in reading at an early age. Part of the fun included arts and crafts and decorating cookies.

In the spirit of Christmas, a special guest appearance highlighted the morning. Santa arrived in time to greet the children and hand out candy.

"With all the technology, kids, as they get older, maybe they aren't picking up as many books, and if they start from birth, the love of reading books, actually picking up books and reading, it's something that can carry with them throughout their lifetime," said Project Coordinator Diane Faust.

The event is held twice a year at the Lakeview Elementary Library.
