Lifeguards will no longer be patrolling Marquette public beaches after Labor Day weekend.
The beaches will still be open, but beachgoers will have to swim at their own risk. No lifeguard on duty signs will be posted at all beaches. The Marquette Fire Department will still be posting beachfront advisory flags and urge people to use common sense around the water.
"You have to use common sense," says Captain Dean Mallos of Marquette City Fire Department. "Lake Superior is a great recreational opportunity for all of us, but it does pose its own limitations and we have to just take those into account when we are going to use the water either swimming or boating."
Depending on the weather, lifeguards may be on the beaches during weekends in September if needed.
