Over 260 participants, including althletes from eight different NMU teams, laced up this Saturday for a great cause. The 6th Annual Walt Kyle Mile kicked off at 9 a.m. with a 5K DASH at the Berry Event Center in Marquette.
The DASH was in memory of Kristen O'Halloran who lost her battle with cancer at the age of 25 in 2008. Participants could choose to walk or run from the Berry Event Center, down Third Street, and up the shore of Lake Superior, only to finish back were they started. Coach Kyle was thrilled with the turnout and said he's glad to be part of a community that knows how to step up to support those folks in need. He said, "I think it's a great event. I think that one of the things that we talk about is when you live in a community, I think it's important to have an opportunity to support people in the community that need help, and we're just really grateful for all the people that have done work here and all the people that are showing up here."Kristen's parents, Marsha and Doug O'Halloran, were on hand to say thanks to all the participants. They also offered a generous donation of $1,500 to the Beacon House. Admission was $15 for runners and $10 to walk. Limited edition T-shirts were also available for $10. All proceeds went to benefit cancer patients staying at the Beacon House in Marquette.
Subway of Marquette provided sandwiches and refreshments after the race.
Here's to another succesful year, coach!
