      Lightning strikes Calumet church

A lightning strike blew holes in the the steeple of the Keweenaw Heritage Center at St. Anne's Church in Calumet. The lightning strike was shortly before noon Sunday. The roofing and underlying wood shattered.

The Calumet Fire Department was sent to the scene to check for fire. Reverend Bob Langseth says the heavy rain prevented a fire. There's been significant damage to the steeple. Also, rain was dripping through the ceiling plaster and flooring in the balcony.

Reverend Langseth would like to thank those who phoned in the strike and to the firefighters who checked out the situation.
