Great Lakes Recovery Centers are getting ready for their upcoming Out of the Darkness walk to prevent suicide this weekend.
The walk is in partnership with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Proceeds from the walk go to that organization and the work they do in the Upper Peninsula with the GLRC.
According to organizers, suicide in Upper Michigan is an issue that is on the rise.
"Sadly enough in the Upper Peninsula, it's close to twice the state average for suicide rates, it's an issue that we're dealing with in our communities, our communities are small, it hit's our people really hard so that's why we've made it a priority to make sure that their service is available," said GLRC Foundation Coordinator Andy Chosa.
Ishpeming coach Jeff Olson, who lost his son to suicide, will be giving the opening remarks. The walk starts at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Al Quaal Recreation Area in Ishpeming.
