Local freestore needs school supply donations

The New Beginnings Angel Mission in Calumet is collecting donations of school supplies for their backpack program before the school year begins.

The freestore is hoping to be able to fill over 200 backpacks for students in Houghton and Keweenaw counties. Any and all school supplies are needed including binders, backpacks, safety scissors, and crayons.

Directors at the freestore say donations can be dropped off at their 5th Street storefront. They say they will be taking donations even after school begins next week.

â??We do this to help out the parents,â?? said Angel Mission co-director Lynn Lanyon. â??We don't ask them questions about income or anything like that, but there are a lot of kids that are in dire need of school supplies, like you see here, and it's fulfilling for me to be able to help parents and the kids get back to school.â??

The store is open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday, and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday.
