A local photographer has won a viewers choice award from the Smithsonian for her film.
Shawn Malone won the award for her film North Country Dreamland. The film uses more than 10,000 time lapse photos of the night sky from various locations in the Upper Peninsula that highlight the aurora borealis.
Malone has been taking photos and videos here in the U.P. since 2000. She says she's very pleased at how the film turned out.
"I've always had an interest in photography. The aurora just became a hobby, I guess you could say, and getting word from the Smithsonian and having them impressed by the video as well, that's a nice honor to have," said Malone, owner of Lake Superior Photo.
More of Malone's work is on display and for sale at her gallery located on Front Street in Marquette.
