Marquette Alternative High School receives Education Excellence award

One Marquette school has received a prestigious award.

Marquette Alternative High School has been awarded the Beyond the Classroom Educational Excellence Award for their Rock the Socks program.

The Michigan Association of School Boards honors schools who went above and beyond creating programs that enhance the learning experience.

Students and staff at the Alternative High School received their award for their Rock the Socks program, created two years ago.

Rock the Socks, thought up entirely by the students, is designed to collect sock donations for the homeless in our community.

"I think it's a great opportunity for our school, and a true reflection of our students and my teachers hard work and dedication to service in the community," said Andrew Crunkleton, Principal of MAHS.

"Our school really promotes community service and working to improve our apathy versus empathy," said Cynthia DePetro, a Teacher at MAHS.

The school will receive a trophy, $1,700 in cash, a poster, and a road sign designating them as a 2014 Educational Excellence Award winner.

Staff members will travel down to Lansing on May 14th to receive the award for the school.
