Marquette County declares State of Emergency

A local State of Emergency has been issued for Marquette County due to freezing water systems.

According to Marquette County Emergency Management, frost levels have exceeded 85 inches in some areas, which is causing water mains to break in Ishpeming, Negaunee and Marquette.

"This freeze is causing local jurisdictions to exhaust their resources in order to keep water mains flowing to their residents and businesses," said Commissioner Gerald Corkin. "This declaration will allow the county to reach out to the state for assistance in obtaining the necessary resources to assist those jurisdictions."

The declaration has been sent to the State Emergency Operations Center for approval. If this is approved, state resources could become available for the local areas dealing with the crisis.

"Marquette County Emergency Management and Damage Assessment officials continue to track information related to this incident," said Marquette County Administrator Scott Erbisch.
