It's been two years in the making, but the Marquette Food Co-op officially broke ground on Friday on what will be their new location in Marquette.
Construction has begun on their new site, located at 305 W. Washington Street. The new store will feature a full deli, meat counter, wider aisles and a wider selection of local foods.
The project cost is about $4.6 million, and Co-op representatives say the wait and cost are all worth it.
"This groundbreaking today represents two years of planning and working toward expanding the Marquette Food Co-op. This is something our members have wanted, and they've made very clear what it is they want in their new store, and we are providing that; it's a very exciting time for our Co-op," said general manager Matt Gougeon.
The current food Co-op location on Baraga Avenue will remain open until the new store is complete, and construction is expected to take about six months. The Co-op plans to have the store open by late March or early April of 2014.
