The city of Marquette has approved a lease extension with the YMCA of Marquette County, who will get three million dollars for an expansion project. The commission unanimously approved the extension, despite concerns from some commissioners regarding parking and snow plowing at the YMCA. A number of YMCA representatives and members spoke on the benefits the 'Y' provides to the community.
The money for the expansion project would come from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development fund, but only if the 'Y' extended their lease by ten years. YMCA officials are excited to start the project.
"We will be able to proceed with our $2.99 million expansion which will benefit the community in unbelievable ways; we will expand our facility and be able to really meet the needs of our members," said Jenna Zdunek of the YMCA.
The YMCA lease with the city of Marquette will now go through 2052. No word on when the expansion project would start.
