Ishpeming residents, business owners and government officials got a chance to get to know their new City Manager better Thursday. Mark Slown was at the Greater Ishpeming Negaunee Chamber of Commerce for an open house event. Originally from Illinois, Slown has about 12 years of City Manager experience in Michigan. He was the City Manager for downstate Oxford and most recently Rogers City. Slown says one of the keys to ensuring Ishpeming's financial future lies in the downtown area.
"The good news is Ishpeming's downtown is already poised for a comeback. It's not going to be just me, it's already moving in that direction; there's new businesses, there's businesses that are growing," said Slown. "You know, the American dream is alive and well in Ishpeming, and people can be successful right here in this town, right now."
Slown takes over for Jared Ottenwess, who is now the City Manager for Traverse City. His first public meeting with the City Council was Wednesday night, where the city passed a balanced budget.
