Michigan Senate race debates under debate

Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Gary Peters says he has accepted three debate invitations and wants five altogether with his Republican opponent, Terri Lynn Land. Peters said Wednesday that he agreed to debates proposed by WOOD-TV in Grand Rapids, WXYZ-TV in Detroit and Michigan State University. The third-term congressman from suburban Detroit says it's important to have debates in Michigan's first open Senate seat in 20 years. He says he'll soon appoint a debate negotiator to coordinate specifics with the Land campaign. Land is a former secretary of state and hasn't committed to specific debates. Land spokeswoman Heather Swift says Land looks forward to "joint appearances" in the fall and will begin discussions after the August primary. Neither candidate has a primary opponent. Peters is requesting five televised, town hall-style debates.
