A special mass service was held Sunday at St. Peter Cathedral in Marquette to honor the Marquette Diocese's first bishop.
Michiganders from all around the state came on a pilgramage to visit the tomb of the Venerable Bishop Baraga.
The current bishop of the cathedral says that this is a special opportunity for the faithful to move forward on another type of pilgramage.
"The significance of coming to pray at his tomb is to ask Bishop Baraga to pray for us, that we may be strengthened by the grace of God in our life pilgrimage...that journey to Heaven." said Bishop John Doerfler.
Bishop Baraga's cause for sainthood is currently being advanced in the Catholic Church.
