New bill gives criminal defendants better legal representation

Governor Rick Snyder signed a bill giving low-income criminal defendants better legal representation.

The bill was signed into law on Monday. According to the new bill, it will enable statewide standards and accountability measures for public defense attorneys representing low-income criminal defendants and create a uniform process to verify that all 83 counties meet the standards.

The governor said every citizen has a right to competent legal counsel and Michigan has been behind the curve for too long.
