After nine months of waiting, an official announcement was made this morning introducing a new Bishop.
Father John Doerfler was appointed by Pope Francis as the thirteenth bishop to the Diocese of Marquette.
"Good morning everyoneâ?| If you haven't guessed yet, I'm the new guy," Doerfler jokingly said at Tuesday morningâ??s press conference.
Within mere seconds the soon to be bishop of the Diocese of Marquette received a big welcome by his new following.
"He's warm and personable," said Denise Foye, the director of Faith Formation at the Diocese of Marquette. "I think the people will come to love him as much as they did Archbishop Sample."
Father John Doerfler said it was "a real surprise" when he received a call asking him to lead more than 50,000 Catholics in the Upper Peninsula.
"I didn't expect the phone call at all," claimed Doerfler.
Despite being surprised, and overwhelmed, Father Doerfler said it was an offer he could not refuse. He succeeds Archbishop Alexander Sample, who was made the Archbishop of Portland Oregon back in early April after serving as the bishop of Marquette for seven years.
"He will walk into the position with Godâ??s graces," said Msgr. Michael Steber, a pastor at Tuesdayâ??s press conference.
Father Doerfler, a born and raised Appleton resident, has been a priest for 22 years and told WLUC reporters he has a lot to learn about the new role.
"What I think is really important is the joy that faith in Jesus Christ brings," said Doerfler. "And I hope to be able to bring that joy."
Father Doerfler will be ordained and installed as the new bishop here at St. Peterâ??s Cathederal on February 11th 2014
