      New year, new life

The new year also brought a new life or two, as the U.P.'s first babies of the new year arrived. The first child of 2013 was delivered at Bell Hospital in Ishpeming. Heather Porter and her husband had a healthy baby boy around 3:30 Tuesday morning. Heather was in labor early Monday morning and drove to Bell Hospital from her home in Chatham. They also received a gift basket, compliments of Bell Hospital.

"It's nice! We get extra gifts and extra attention, I guess, and he'll be able to have a birthday that he'll always have fun celebrating, I think," said new mother, Heather Porter. The baby weighed 7 lbs., 15 oz. The couple has named the baby Lane.

Marquette General also welcomed a New Year's baby for 2013. Michelle Weatherdon and her fiance, Ben Lemieux, welcomed a baby girl into their lives at about 9 a.m. Tuesday. The couple were celebrating New Year's Eve at the ball drop in Marquette and shortly after that, Michelle went into labor.

"We went to the ball drop and celebrated, brought in the new year. We didn't have any idea we'd be bringing it in like this. I'm speechless right now, full of joy. I couldn't ask for a better way to bring in the new year," said new father, Ben Lemieux.

The Lemieux baby girl weighed 6 lbs. The couple have not picked out a name just yet. At War Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie, Monica McDonald of Rudyard gave birth to her second child, Owen.
