North Star Academy students explore aviation opportunities

The Exploring Aviation event started today at the Northern Michigan University aviation facility in Marquette. The event is part of North Star Academyâ??s career awareness program.

Twelve students from the North Star Academy took part in todayâ??s activities where they learned the basics of flight and airplane control systems. Tomorrow they will focus on navigation as well as possible careers in aviation.

â??If they see the opportunities as far as careers are concerned, I will have achieved my missionâ??, said aviation instructor Bob Wilson. â??But there is a passion that develops once you have become involved with aviation that is very difficult to describe, but thatâ??s whatâ??s going to make them successful.â??

Tomorrow the students will plan their own flights including route, weather, time and fuel needs. On Friday they will fly their planned trips with trained pilots in single engine aircrafts out of Sawyer International Airport.
