Northern Michigan University students are on a series of volunteering trips.

Saturday's trip took seven students to the Upper Peninsula Welfare Society, or UPAWS, in Negaunee Township. The NMU Volunteer Center is calling it the Spring Service Sampler Project, and it takes student volunteers somewhere new each week. The new project is meant to introduce different volunteering opportunities to the student body. NMU student Devan Balentine says he's glad he came along for the ride.

"It's been a great experience so far. I'm looking forward to volunteering even more after this now," said Balentine.

Next weekend, the Spring Service Sampler Project travels to the Moosewood Nature Center in Marquette.
