Some athletic kids got a chance to run a race of their own Friday night in Marquette ahead of the the sixth annual Marquette Trail 50 Ultra-Marathon Saturday. About 50 young racers took off for a one mile or five-k run at Tourist Park. The kids race is put on with the help of volunteers from the Northern Michigan University Cross-Country team. Organizers had awards for the fastest boy and girl in each category, but they say just getting them to experience the run is what it's all about.
"Trial running is just great and we want the kids to get the opportunity to run the trails, the adults are running the long races tomorrow so the kids get a chance to just see what it's like to run on the trails and we have a lot of beautiful trails," said Kids Race Director Jenny Ryan.
Last year they only had a handful of participants, this year about 50 signed up. More than 300 runners are expected to participate in the Ultra-Marathon Saturday.
