Opening day for the U.P. State Fair

The U.P. State Fair at the Escanaba Fairgrounds is going on all week, and Monday was opening day.

Even though it was a rainy, overcast opening day at the fair, that didn't stop people from attending.

Many stands and animal owners were still setting up and getting ready for the multitude of shows happening over the next few days.

But if animals aren't your thing, don't worry; From junk food, to rides, to games and more, you can find it at the U.P. State Fair.

"It's fun and it's a good place to meet new people, and the lines go by quick," said Jaqueline Tovar.

This is the fifth year of independent operation for the fair.

The fair runs today, Monday, August 11th through Sunday the 17th.

"I like watching the shows. I mean I'm usually in a lot of the breeding stock shows and that, but even like the lamb shows and the pig shows, I enjoy watching those and just you know, seeing what they're about," said Waylon Rondeau.

There are numerous animal shows throughout the week, including steer, goats, sheep, swine and miniature horses.

The biggest animal attractions, according to fair-goers, seem to be the horse and cattle shows.

"I'm showing seven and six of them are breeding stock. And I have one steer that I'll be selling at the auction. And you know, it's just awesome," said Rondeau.

But lets not forget about the rides.

There's quite the variety, ensuring all ages can enjoy a thrill!

"I like the zipper, because I like going upside down and stuff like that," said Tovar.

The gates for the fair open at 9a.m. Tuesday through Sunday.

Adults 13 & up are $8.00, youth 6-12 years are $5.00, and kids 5 & under are free!

There are a number of shows taking place in the Grandstand as well!

Tuesday Sebastian Bach and Firehouse will perform.

Wednesday, Easton Corbin, Thursday, Blood Sweat and Tears featuring Bo Bice, Friday, Joe Diffie will play.

And on Saturday and Sunday, we bring the race cars into the Grandstand with UPIR Racing on Saturday and Armageddon On Wheels Sunday.
