Mayor Richard Wills of the city of Negaunee passed the gavel to his successor, Keith LaCosse, at Thursday's City Council meeting. Mayor Wills is a World War II veteran who spent three years overseas fighting in five separate battles including the Battle of the Bulge. At 93 he's one of the oldest active mayors in the country; due to term limits, Thursday was his last meeting. Earlier in the month, Keith LaCosse was elected to the position. He spoke about what he wants to focus on as mayor.
"Business drives the economy, and if you get more businesses in, you broaden your tax base. We have to continue with conservative fiscal policy while trying to bolster the economic growth in the downtown area and try to make Negaunee a more attractive place to want to live," said LaCosse.
The council also adopted a balanced budget during the meeting. LaCosse won't officially take the position of mayor until December 1.
