The name of the Hurley, Wisc. man fatally shot Friday morning in his apartment has been released. Leo J. Driscoll, 85, was fatally shot by a SWAT team at 410 Third Avenue South. The shooting is under investigation by the Sheriff's Department in nearby Vilas County. Driscoll threatened his apartment manager with a handgun and then retreated to his apartment, according to police.
Driscoll's girlfriend warned police he had multiple firearms. Several officers of the SWAT team are on administrative leave while the incident is investigated. Driscoll had no previous record with local police.
An 85-year-old Hurley resident is dead following a shooting with police on Friday, according to the Hurley Police Department.
At around 8:38 a.m. Hurley Police were dispatched to the Southgate Village for a report of a man with a gun. Upon arrival, it was determined that the suspect retreated to his apartment. It was subsequently learned that the suspect was in possession of multiple firearms, according to authorities.
The suspect refused all contact with officials. The Gogebic/Iron County area SWAT team was activated along with officers from neighboring agencies from Wisconsin and Michigan. All residents were evacuated to a safe location and have since been relocated while the matter is being investigated.
Officers remain at the scene as the investigation continues. We will post more information as it is released.
