Phone scam utilizes government shutdown to gather information

The Michigan State Police L'Anse Post is warning residents in the Baraga County area of a new phone scam preying on senior citizens.

Three cases have already been reported on Thursday since the mid-afternoon hours. The callers have been women claiming to be from either Medicare or Medicaid, according to police.

They tell the victims that due to the recent government shutdown, some of their personal information and records have been lost. The caller then asks for the missing information over the phone and gives a bogus 1-800 number to call back.

The state police are reminding everyone to never give out personal information over the phone, and if you've received any suspicious phone calls contact your local law enforcement agency.
