      Pioneer Days kicks off

Firefighter competition at last year's Pioneer Days

Pioneer Days activities are prepped and ready to go in Negaunee, and residents couldn't be more excited for their favorite events. They look forward to them all year.

"The fireworks. They're cool and they blow up. I just like watching stuff blow up!" said Richie Lowes, 10, of Negaunee.

"I really like the parade. You just have all the people in town, and everyone's enjoying it, so it's fun to have it go through town," said Julie Lindeman of Negaunee.

"And friends and family on the porch just kicking back and enjoying the day," said Neil Lindeman of Negaunee.

One of the staples of Pioneer Days in Negaunee is the NHS Alumni Games. Negaunee High School grads of years past get together and have a healthy dose of rivalry with some good, old-fashioned softball. Alumni games at LaCombe Field kicked off since last weekend, but the abundance of other festivities started Tuesday, with a continental breakfast at the Senior Center.

As for the rest of the week, get ready! There's an plenty of fun to be had around Negaunee during Pioneer Days.

"Well, all my grandkids have a really good time and watching the kids enjoy themselves. It's just a good community activity," said Joseph Duckworth, Sr. of Negaunee.

And for those who can't wait for the parade, community picnic, and fireworks, make sure you're in Negaunee on Saturday the 13th. The parade starts at 11:30 a.m., the picnic at 1 p.m., and the fireworks start over Teal Lake at dusk.
