Police have identified the suspect in a shooting that took place in Palmer on Saturday afternoon as 52-year-old Richard E. Lehto.
According to the Michigan State Police, Lehto was involved in an argument resulting in the discharge of a firearm, leaving his son critically injured. The victim, identified as 18-year-old Zachary Lehto, was taken to Marquette General Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery. He was last reported as in stable condition.
Lehto was taken into custody after the incident, charged with assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder. According to officials, Lehto was also charged with firearm usage under the influence and domestic violence third offense.
Police report that Lehto was arraigned on charges Monday, with a preliminary exam set for March 26 at 9:15 a.m. in Marquette District Court.
