Police warn of fake census scam

The Michigan State Police at the Iron Mountain post have issued a warning about a new phone scam.

A resident in Iron County reportedly received a phone call from a person claiming to work for the Census Bureau asking for personal information. The resident hung up and alerted the authorities.

When the Michigan State Police attempted to call the number from the resident's caller ID, no one answered.

Police remind you never to give out personal information to unknown callers, and to always confirm the identity of a contact by independently speaking with an identified source, i.e. your bank, credit card company, etc. Do not respond to unsolicited emails from unknown senders, especially those that request personal information.

The State Police that you report any suspicious contacts to them for investigation.
