A Kent County judge has ordered a man to pay $100 or spend 10 days in jail for wearing a hat in court.
The Grand Rapids Press says Ryan Cameron Lasenby was in Circuit Judge James Robert Redford's courtroom Monday for a friend's sentencing. When the judge announced the hearing was adjourned, Lasenby started to place a baseball cap on his head. Redford reminded him hats aren't allowed in the courtroom.
Lasenby put the hat on a few steps away from the hallway.
Redford told Lasenby to stop, then informed the 29 year old he was being held in contempt.
Lasenby said he "didn't mean to disrespect the court" and asked [ "Ten days in jail for wearing a hat?"
He has three days to pay the $100 or go to jail.
