Portage Health held its annual Lights of Love tree lighting ceremony Wednesday evening to commemorate loved ones in the community who have passed in 2013.
The Lights of Love ceremony has been an annual event for over 20 years at the hospital.
The ceremony included Christmas songs and a reading of names of those passed.
This year the Portage Health Auxiliary raised over $3,000 from the event to go toward the scholarship fund for area students in the medical field.
With a matching grant from the hospital, this year, six students will receive $1,000 scholarships in the spring.
â??It's always nice to pause, especially this time of year, to honor people, to remember people, and it gives the community an opportunity to come together to do this,â?? said Portage Health Auxiliary President, Barb Worrall. â??It also gives the community an opportunity to support the scholarships, which have been so important in this area.â??
Members of the Portage Health Auxiliary say they have given out over 50 scholarships to students over the years through the Lights of Love event.
