January is National Radon Awareness Month. Radon is an odorless and invisible gas that occurs naturally in the soil, and Marquette County has some off the highest levels in the state.
"The highest levels of radon gas in homes has been detected in areas of Marquette County, the highest levels in the state," said Patrick Jacuzzo of the Marquette County Health Department.
Jacuzzo went on to say that the only way to know if you have elevated levels of radon in your home is to run a radon test. Test kits are available at some local home improvement stores and at the Marquette County Health Department.
The best time to test for radon gas is during the winter months when your windows are closed. Radon gas is the second leading cause of lung cancer behind cigarette smoking.
