Police are reporting a recent phone scam asking for "back taxes" on behalf of the IRS.
According to the Marquette County Sheriff's Department, the caller poses as an IRS agent asking for "back taxes." Police say that a "spoofed" call may be received at the same time, appearing to come from a local law enforcement agency.
The caller then informs the victim that they have a warrant for their arrest. This call is "spoofed" to come in on caller ID as if it were a local law enforcement number.
The sheriff's department warns that the IRS and law enforcement agencies will not call regarding "back taxes" or warrants. The recent number used in the scam was (202) 241-6439.
Police request that you hang up immediately when you receive a call from a scammer.
