Lifesaving stations at some Marquette beaches are getting a fresh look, thanks to some young volunteers.
Throughout the week, they've been staining the stands that hold life jackets and rescue equipment. Wednesday morning, they were working at the beaches around Picnic Rocks.
Boy Scout Adam Smith of Marquette is leading the group of fifteen volunteers as part of his service project to become an Eagle Scout. The 14-year-old was approached by city officials to play a role in the ongoing process of improving safety at city beaches.
"I think it's important because when we preserve these life stations, they'll be around for a lot longer, and that way the materials needed to help people if they're in distress will be available," said Smith.
The young volunteers hope to wrap up their work Thursday morning.
