The Delta County Sheriff's Department is getting a $25,000 grant from TransCanada Corporation.
TransCanada is a North American energy company with offices in the Great Lakes region. The donated money will be used to purchase new equipment and fund training for the Delta County Dive and Rescue Team.
"Our dive team applied for the grant back in October," said Delta County Sheriff Gary Ballweg. "We wanted $20,000 as part of a large project to completely re-outfit our dive team with new wetsuits and dry suits, regulators, masks and some other equipment."
"We heard about the request for some help for Sheriff Ballweg and the dive rescue team," said Dennis Skinner of TransCanada Corp. "We thought, that's part of being a good neighbor and we just thought, well, we're in."
The new equipment will allow divers to stay in cold water longer, and locate people more quickly. The funds will also go toward outfitting squad cars with new video cameras.
