Residents learn about Copper Country's smelter

Ever wonder how copper was made? Well, those who did headed to the Copper Country Saturday to get an inside look at how it??s done.

Dozens toured the historic Quincy Smelter Site in Laurium, the only mine with smelter parts left in the Great Lakes region. This site typically offers tours once a month throughout the summer and some of the fall. The money raised from them helps fund preservation of the smelter and mining site.

"Keep the bills paid for, the electricity, pay for advertising and pay for projects we would like to carry on," explained Horst Schmidt, a member of the Quincy Smelter Association.

The park service is trying to purchase the Quincy Smelter Site. It will cost approximately $330,000.
