Despite the gloomy weather, many people still traveled to K.I. Sawyer Airport on Saturday for Discover Sawyer Family Fun Day.
For the first time, guests had the chance to experience Sawyer Airport from a different point of view.
â??Today is Discover Sawyer Day and it is exactly what the title says, discover sawyerâ?? said Duane Duray, airport manager. â??It gives the public a chance to see the asset that they have.â??
Those in attendance could take part in an 8K bike or run at 7:30 am on the airport runway.
"It is just a unique thing for the public to get out onto the runway and it is not something that you can do every dayâ?? said Duray. â??This took a lot of planning and coordinating with a lot of the air carriers and other commercial users of Sawyer so that we could close the runway down for an hour and a half without affecting their operations."
Sawyer Airport has the longest runway in the state of Michigan.
â??You can stand in the middle and look in both directions and you will not see the endâ?? said Duray.
A pancake breakfast hosted by the Marquette Rotary Breakfast Club fed the hungry bikers and runners after the race. Guests also enjoyed a vendor fair, car show and equipment displays. One group set up a display of model airplanes and a flying demo.
â??We are just trying to recruit new members today and educate them on what R.C. airplanes are all about and what type of fun it is to be had for the entire familyâ?? said John Anderson, secretary of the model aviation club.
The goal of Sawyer Days is to give the community a sense of ownership over the airport.
â??The public feels that they are fenced out of their own airport and we want them to just feel like this is their airport againâ?? said Duray.
The airport group is confident that Saturdayâ??s success will keep the event running for years to come.
